Where the Hill of Crosses is located?

Hill of Crosses is located in Northern Lithuania, 46 km from the border of Latvia/Lithuania. Hill of Crosses is 123 km (1 hour and 45 min) drive from Riga and 220 km (2 hours and 35 min) drive from Vilnius.

When the first crosses were placed?

The first crosses were placed in 1831. In written records, the Hill of Crosses first time was mentioned in 1850.

How many crosses are at the sight?

There are about 200 000 crosses at the sight. The exact number is unknown and the hill gets bigger as more and more crosses are placed every single day.

Can the sight be visited during the winter?

The sight can be visited at any time of the year. The sight is very beautiful when covered with snow but please dress accordingly to the weather so you can stay at the place as long as you want.

Can I leave a cross at the sight?

Yes, you can leave a cross at the sight. You can make a cross by yourself and take it on a tour or purchase one on a sight.

Is there a minimum number of people required for the tour?

There is no minimum number of people required for the tour. Private tours can be set up also for solo travelers and couples.

Lately, the Sunrise tours to Hill of Crosses have become more and more popular. In summer it does not only give you an outstanding experience and extra hours to explore Riga on the same day (as in the middle of summer you might return back to Riga by 7.30 am). A great bonus is that the Sunrise tour of the Hill of Crosses lets you avoid the crowds which are in summer on weekends. In winter the sunrise at the Hill of Crosses is at around 8.30 am-9 am which means pick up at around 5.30 am-6 am.

As with all the regular Hill of Crosses options, also the Sunrise tour of Hill of Crosses can be combined with a visit to Siauliai city or a drive via Jelgava city on a way back to Riga. Regarding the Rundale Palace, we do not suggest combining it with the sunrise tour of the Hill of Crosses because Rundale Palace opens only at 10 am, therefore possible only in winter months.

Below you can see the schedules for summer (15th July) and winter (15th January) to give an approximate idea. The pick-up time would be scheduled exactly for the inquired date and given to you before you confirm the tour.
